Go to the Period Table and click on the "O" symbol for oxygen. Scroll down to the thumbnail of a hand holding a flame stick labeled "Classic Illustrated" (1941 series) and click. Read the article and answer the questions that follow:

1. Who is "the Father of Soda Water and Discoverer of Oxygen?"


2. What did the scientist from question 1 invent in order to collect quantities of his "strange, new air?"


3. What two things compose the first "soda water" ever manufactured?


4. From this article describe how oxygen was seperated from an oxide of mercury deposit.



5. Explain what happened when the candle and the red hot wire was placed in the oxygen gas.



6. Did the mice live a longer or shorter life when placed in a vessel containing oxygen gas.


7. Give two examples of how oxygen gas has been beneficial to the field of medicine.


When you have finished answering the above questions click back to the periodic table and begin exploring the periodic table by reading comics. Use this paper to record notes about ten elements that you found in the comics. Also list how the elements areused in a specific comic, and don't forget to put the name of the comic where you found it. The first one can be found by clicking on "Na" the symbol for sodium. Find out what happens when sodium is placed in water by reading "The Doom Patrol".
