RHS Library Orientation

Welcome to the RHS Library. The library staff would like to ensure that all library patrons at RHS are confident and experienced users of information resources. This orientation will acquaint new users with available online and local (RHS) resources for classroom and personal research. If you have any questions about locating resources, please ask one of the library staff (ellen.taylor@cmcss.net or valerie.meadows@cmcss.net).

To locate materials in the RHS Library, use the online catalog: Alexandria Researcher Web Catalog. You may search by author, title, subject, any word (key word), series name, or call number. You can sort the results by title, author or call number (use call number if you will be searching the actual shelves). The results page(s) will give the call number and availability of all items listed. To read the details on any book, double-click to bring up the individual record. To print a bibliography of results, click Print on your web browser (this will only print the results page that is showing.) Go to the shelf and locate the book, take it to the circulation desk, and check it out. Make sure to review the date due slip in the back of the book to avoid overdue fines.

Electric Library is an online resource that includes newspaper and magazine articles, PICTURES, maps, books and TV/Radio transcripts. It contains full-text articles that are current and revised daily for research purposes. The CMCSS username is subclark37040 and the password is 12527 (these must be entered in the log in screen to access the database.) To find a picture, type your search term in the search box and select "Picture", then click the search box. To print, click on the "Printer-friendly Version" box and wait for it to load. Click the printer button on your browser and go to the circulation printer to retrieve your document. Log your name in on the clipboard and number of pages, and the library staff will give you your document. (After orientation, printing costs per page are $.10).

Grolier Online is another paid subscription database available to CMCSS students. It has mainly encyclopedic information in several areas, including the science and social studies area. The username for accessing this resource is cmcss and the password is grolier. When you access the home screen, you can type your search term in the bottom right search box, or go to one of the databases (Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, The New Book of Knowledge, The New Book of Popular Science, or Lands and People). If you use the general search box, your results will show which database the article is from. Select an article, put a check in the box next to it to preview it and print. Also, send it in an email to Mrs. Taylor (ellen.taylor@cmcss.net).

Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) is a state-sponsored database that contains NUMEROUS valuable research information. Information on business, health, literary criticism, reading guidance, and general topics all exist in this database. The password is elvis. For our purposes today, go to the "What Do I Read Next?" database (scroll down the page) and type in the name of your favorite author. You should get a results page, which you then print (push print button on your browser page).

Google is a popular Internet search engine that will search the World Wide Web efficiently for virtually any topic of interest. Select a topic from a recent classroom lesson and do a Google search to find 2 articles and a picture of your subject. (You must not print more than 2 pages of any article; if it is longer, select the text, copy and paste into a Word document for printing). To print an image, hold down until the popup box allows you to select "Open Image in new window". Print the new page that has the image only (not the text).

After completing each task, attach the printouts and turn in to the library staff for credit. Please ask questions as you go through these exercises. Our goal is for you to be a happy and productive user of information.
