"f.o.t.l."
The Friends of the Library are a group of student volunteers who give their time in a room where they feel at home and serve the student body. There is a three-fold purpose: students serve in their school so they feel a part of the school community; students learn valuable job skills such as service, team work and pride; students get a view of Librarianship, to the extent that we serve our patrons. The advisors are the Librarians. There are two semester parties with food and fellowship. Students receive a certificate for hours served. An interest meeting for new members is held at the beginning of each school year in September.

On Friday, October 7 2005, the Northwest High School Viking Library in conjunction with its Friends of the Library program hosted a High School Reading Day with special appearance by world-renowned young adult author, Ms. Gabrielle Zevin. Ms. Zevin is the author of two novels, Margarettown and Elsewhere, the latter of which she read from with students on Friday. She currently lives in New York City and graduated from Harvard University in 2000. Ms. Zevin shared information about her life with students before conducting a question and answer session. She then read passages from her most recently published book. This event was sponsored by Humanities Tennessee and the Southern Festival of Books. All students present on this day were given a free copy of Ms. Zevin's book, Elsewhere, again through an endowment from Humanities Tennessee and the Southern Festival of Books.
