History of Liberty Elementary School

Montgomery County has seen extensive growth in its population since the early 1990s.   In order to accommodate the population growth, the county began construction on Liberty Elementary School in September 1995.   In August 1996, Liberty was opened at 849 South Liberty Church Road as a kindergarten through grade five school.   Students from Byrns Darden, Minglewood, and Woodlawn Elementary Schools were rezoned to fill the newly opened Liberty Elementary School.

In 1998, approximately 70 students were again rezoned resulting in a shift of students back to Byrns Darden.   In addition, a second life skills class and a special education preschool class were added to Liberty.   In 1999, all fifth graders were zoned to Burt, resulting in Liberty becoming a preschool through grade four school.   In 2003, fifth grade was added once again to Liberty. In the Fall of 2004, the special education preschool class was removed from Liberty.

Liberty Elementary was a Targeted Assistance program from August 1997 to May 2003. Beginning in August 2003 Federal monies were used to fund the school-wide Title I program at Liberty. At this time, Liberty continues to serve as a school-wide Title I school.

In August of 2005, Liberty Elementary was awarded one of Tennessee's Voluntary Pre-K Program Grants. The pre-school program targeting at risk four year olds began in the fall of 2005.

Principal Joy Holder and Assistant Principal Jimmy Stephens lead Liberty Elementary.   Mrs. Holder has held her position since the opening of Liberty in 1996.    Mr. Stephens joined the staff in the Fall of 2003.
